Mighty, Paranormal, Musketeers

Movies, and a bit.

"The Mighty Macs" is a well executed come-from-behind sports movie, It is based on a team that won three consecutive national championships in the early 1970s, and is a REALLY amazing story to the extent that it is true. I haven't been able to verify many of the details, though. (Doesn't mean the story is true or false, just that I haven't found any information at all.)

"Paranormal Activity 3" is much of the same with its predecessors. There are some REALLY creepy moments (my favorite involves a bedsheet and a baby sitter), but the story gets really silly (and violates the canon of the previous films) in the last 20 minutes or so. The producers continue to demonstrate that you don't need much at all in the way of special effects to make a movie scary.

"The Three Musketeers" is REALLY silly, but fun for all of that. After the first scene, which was cut from whole cloth, the film stay surprisingly close to Dumas until the half way point, when it heads off into steampunk fantasy. The script also chooses to present Queen Anne as innocent of the adultery which is central to the Dumas story (in which the Musketeers whose to commit treason to protect the Queen's honor), which takes some of the fun out of the story. So... Silly, but fun. Also, unfortunately, dying at the box office, at least in part because 3D is dead.

And by the way: "The Big Year" is the first movie in a long time that actually gets better on second viewing.

In other news... On Tuesday we had the first successful fire in our fireplace in the nineteen years we have lived in the house. Due to some design issues, the fireplace always tended to pour smoke back into the house. We tried a few tricks to correct this, and eventually put a small cast iron stove into the fireplace to direct the smoke, which kind of worked. Two years ago on Hallow E'en, we built too big a fire and one of the glass panels in fireplace screen. Monday we finally got the replacement screen installed, and I tried a different trick to deal with the smoke issue, and everything worked beautifully. If was kind of cool.
