Drunken Angel

Drunken Angel
(Michael Longcor)

Oh, a rogue I've been, and a rover all,
From the day that I was born.
And I've rattled o'er this old dirt ball
From the Chukchi to Cape Horn.
And the things I've done, and battled, and drank,
No tale will ever tell,
'Till I sing with a drunken angel
On the merry side of Hell.

I've rolled in cash and I've rolled in dirt,
But I've rolled on just the same.
And I've laughed and won, and bled and hurt,
In obscurity and fame.
I won't give in and I'll never give out,
And no memory I'll sell,
When I sing with a drunken angel
On the merry side of Hell.

Through war and love and friendship's length,
I'll roister life to the end.
And my worth is known by my enemy's strength,
As much as strength of friend.
I'm no man's master, and no man's slave,
Oh, I've taught and learned it well,
And I'll sing with a drunken angel
On the merry side of Hell.

Life for the living and death for the dead
Is a rule that's wise to heed.
And we've worked and played and battled and wed
By whatever code or creed.
We've been good and bad and sinners and saints
Since that old dark Trickster fell,
And I'll sing with a drunken angel--
I'll drink with a drunken angel--
I'll toast with a drunken angel--
On the merry side of Hell.
