Last Wednesday, while I was buying the kayak, there came a point when the clerk had to remove a tag from the boat. He looked at me sheepishly and said, "I need to cut this, so I have to take my knife out. Don't freak out, ok?" He then produced an innocuous little three inch lock back and cut the tag while I stared at him flabbergasted.

Do we really live in a society where a person, going about the legitimate functions of his job, needs to provide a verbal warning before displaying a knife? I worry enough about institutionalized and endemic cowardice as it is, and now this...

I often worry that humanity will not survive to the end of this century. Occasionally, I wonder if failing to survive might not be a GOOD thing...
