Mediocre and Miraculous

Yesterday we saw "Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer" and "Evan Almighty".

"Surfer" was lamer than we expected, though it managed to make Reed Richards charismatic, and at least some of the jokes worked. Unfortunately, we have gotten to the point where effects really can't get any better, and it takes takes a decent script to provide emotional impact under those effects. It doesn't happen here.

"Evan" was one of those movies where I spent at least the first half hour wondering what I was doing there, and why I thought seeing this movie was a good idea. Eventually it started to work a little bit, and then the animal footage started... They had a pair of trained spotted hyenas. I can't really hate a movie with hyenas; it would be against the rules.

"Evan" did include the song, "Are You Ready for a Miracle", though, and that reminded both Dementia and I of the 1992 Steve Martin movie, "Leap of Faith." "Leap" is an absolutely brilliant, and nearly flawless film that manages to walk the vanishingly thin line between Tricksterism and Christianity with deftness. Martin plays an utterly corrupt itinerant preacher, and the portrayal of his road show is worth the price of admission on its own. And then things start to get strange...

It's out on DVD. Find a copy and see it. Dementia recommends seeing it as a double feature with "Bronco Billy", which is an idea that borders on moral imperative...
