Samhain Thoughts

When I was a kid, I loved Hallow E'en. The candy was nice, of course, but I loved the costumes. I developed something of a specialty in badly executed versions of obscure but visually interesting concepts that drew a LOT of strange looks...

The Tylenol scare in 1982 killed the Trick or Treat tradition for a few years, and the over-supervised, officially sanctioned thing that has gradually grown up in its place makes me kind of sad...

In the early '90s I started a decade long, heels-first slide into paganism that significantly colored my approach to the holiday, and in '94 and '95 I fought an emotionally brutal battle with my employer of the time over my right to look like myself that significantly altered my feelings about wearing costumes...

The year ends tonight at sunset, and the new year begins tomorrow at dawn, and in between, the walls between the years, and the walls between the worlds, are, if not actually down, at least very, very thin. It is a night for reflection and speculation.

We will have a fire in the fireplace this evening, and anyone who is in the vicinity is welcome to stop in for a few minutes and drink a toast to the turning of the year. (I mean that literally, by the way: We are not throwing a party, we are only inviting any who care to do so to come, drink a toast, and leave.) I can not turn anyone from my door on the Night Between the Years...

I will probably go for a walk sometime after midnight, as has become my habit; if there are monsters abroad tonight, well, I have been a monster in my time, and fear nothing.

May the coming year be kind to all who read this today.
