So long, Dand...

George MacDonald Fraser died on January 2 at the age of 82, and the world is diminished thereby. Fraser gave the world Harry Flashman, Dand MacNeil, and Private "Piltdown" MacAuslan.

If you have not read Fraser, and have any interest in history, or swashbuckling, or just good, transparent story telling, do so. He is at least excellent.

On a personal note, Fraser's three "MacAuslan" books ("The General Danced at Dawn", "MacAuslan in the Rough", and "The Sheikh and the Dustbin") are THE books I turn to when I absolutely NEED to get outside of my head and outside of my life. The title story of "The Sheikh and the Dustbin" is probably my all time favorite short story...
