"The Immigrant" is a period piece with high production values, solid performances from a great cast, and aspirations to (or rather delusions of) significance. It fails to make the sale. I am not quite sure why.
"Maleficent" is Disney's attempt to retell "Sleeping Beauty" sideways. It isn't a bad fantasy, but it is crippled by its source material. The name "Maleficent" so perfectly describes someone who is magnificently evil that it HURTS to imagine her as young and innocent. I am not particularly fond of the current trend to regenerate villains in any case, but choosing to attempt the feat with a character whose NAME was built to evoke evil just stacks the deck too far against success.
I have many mods to the Frankenstein Canoe planned for this year. I hoped to get several of them done before this weekend's Rend Lake messabout, but a lack of energy thwarted me. So I will make the trip, and THEN upgrade the boat. Ah, well.
