"Get On Up" is a convoluted mess, in spite of stellar performances from an excellent cast. It is clear that the director Had Something to Say, but he utterly failed to say it, and mangled the story he had started with along the way.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" is neither as bad as I feared nor as good as I hoped. The heavy hand of Michael Bay does not QUITE crush deranged magic that makes the turtles tick, but comes close. The woefully miscast Megan Fox rises to the challenge enough to not make things worse, which is actually pretty high praise. And there are a few things, like the characterization of the turtles themselves, that were pretty much perfect.
I spent a lot of time after movie thinking about why Megan Fox was such a failure as April. She hit her marks and sold her lines, for the most part. And she never projected stupidity in her usual "confused by doorknobs" way. Her performance would have been tolerable, maybe even adequate, if she had just been playing a random character. So why did she fail so badly? Eventually, I came up with this: Fox pouts first, and then sneers, and then moves on to other expressions. And April... GRINS. Always has.
