Once Upon a Time...

During the peculiar period between the reigns of Richard of Chicago the First and Richard of Chicago the Second, they made movies in the city of Chicago, as opposed to the more recent practice of hanging signs that say "Chicago" at strategic points in Montreal and/or Vancouver. And of those, the most entertaining, and the one that captured the feel of the city the best, was "Running Scared," starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines.

"Running Scared" came out during the summer of 1986, when I was failing to learn the art of air traffic control in Oklahoma City. I didn't feel homesick until, or perhaps except, when I was watching that movie, but there were so many familiar scenes... The critics hated "Running Scared"; I loved it, and not just for the locations. It is easily as good as any of the "Lethal Weapon" movies, it just didn't catch on.

This comes up because Gregory Hines died of cancer on August 10 at the age of 57. I always enjoyed his acting, and LOVED his dancing, but it is the character of Ray Hughes from "Running Scared" for which I will always remember him.

"Promise me we'll get robbed... a LOT."

Whatever you say, Ray.
